In Tibetan, "Ma" refers to "Maqiu", which means the Yellow River, and "Duo" means source. Therefore, "Maduo" is the source of the Yellow River. After flowing out of the Eling Lake, the Yellow River transforms into a calm and gentle river, traveling about 60 kilometers to reach the Maduo County town at an altitude of 4272 meters, where the Yellow River nourishes a beautiful wetland. Due to the loose soil by the river and the high water level, in 1978, the Maduo County town was relocated three kilometers to the north, and the distant view is now the new county town.

 

 

However, due to the high altitude, Maduo County has an average annual temperature of only minus 4 degrees Celsius, with no absolute frost-free period throughout the year, and a heating period lasting up to 11 months. It is understood that previously, residents in the county mainly relied on burning coal and cow dung for heating, which not only caused air pollution but also had unsatisfactory heating effects. Therefore, heating has always been a top priority for the local herdsmen.

 

 

Since 2017, Maduo County has implemented a clean heating project, transitioning from coal to electricity. The Maduo County Ethnic Boarding School has adopted a variety of flexible heating methods that integrate solar thermal, photovoltaic, and energy storage, meaning that both heat and electricity come from clean energy. This project has also become the first clean heating project in high-cold and high-altitude areas in the country.
